Day trips from Bari without a car: trains, operators and what you can really reach

Short answer

Without a car, Polignano, Monopoli, Ostuni and Trani are easy by Trenitalia regional train from Bari; Alberobello by Ferrovie del Sud Est; Matera, Altamura and Gravina by Ferrovie Appulo Lucane. Harder without a car: Cisternino, the Itria Valley in one day, Castel del Monte and the Castellana Caves. For those, a guided tour makes sense.

Bari is the ideal base if you don’t drive. Four separate rail networks leave from Bari Centrale. The trick is knowing which operator serves which destination.

Which train for which destination

Destination Operator Typical time
Polignano a Mare Trenitalia 20–35 min
Monopoli Trenitalia 30–40 min
Ostuni Trenitalia 45 min–1 h (station 2.5 km from the centre)
Trani Trenitalia 30–45 min
Alberobello Ferrovie del Sud Est 1h40–2h
Matera Ferrovie Appulo Lucane 1h30–2h
Bari airport Ferrotramviaria / Trenitalia about 20 min

Times depend on the train and on changes. They are indicative: check the timetable for your day of travel.

Where the train is not enough

  • Cisternino: no convenient train to the town.
  • Itria Valley in one day: the towns are close, but services are rare.
  • Castel del Monte: train to Andria, then a bus or taxi.
  • Castellana Caves: outside the town.

For these, an organised tour from Bari saves you hours. Or rent a car for just one day.

Three rules that save trouble

  1. Check the operator: at Bari Centrale each one has its own platforms, ticket offices or entrances.
  2. Check the day’s notices, especially for FSE and FAL: replacement buses are common.
  3. Check the last train back before you leave, not once you are there.

FAQ

Can I use one ticket for all trains?

No. Trenitalia, Ferrovie del Sud Est, Ferrovie Appulo Lucane and Ferrotramviaria are separate operators, with their own tickets and often separate platforms or stations at Bari Centrale. Buy the ticket from the right operator.

How do I get from Bari airport to the city centre?

By train from the station below the airport to Bari Centrale, about 20 minutes. Trenitalia lists a fare of €5.30; check the current fare before you travel. The city bus is cheaper but slower.

Are regional trains in Puglia reliable?

On Trenitalia's Bari–Lecce line, usually yes. On FSE and FAL lines some services are replaced by buses during engineering works, so always check the day's notices.
