Short answer

Polignano a Mare is the easiest day trip from Bari: regional trains from Bari Centrale take about 20–35 minutes, and the station is in town, a few minutes' walk from the old centre. By car it is 38 km. Half a day is enough. Pair it with Monopoli, 5 minutes away by train.

When to go

Early morning or after 6pm, May to October. Off season it is perfect for an unhurried walk by the sea.

When to avoid

Saturdays and Sundays in July and August between 11am and 5pm: Lama Monachile is packed, so are the car parks, and sea-view terraces often have a minimum spend.

Polignano is the town of white houses on the edge of the cliffs and of the little beach of Lama Monachile, wedged between two rock walls. It is also where singer Domenico Modugno was born, and his statue stands on the seafront. It is the most photographed spot on the coast south of Bari, so in summer the hour you choose matters.

How to get there from Bari

By train: the best option. Regional trains on the Bari–Lecce line leave Bari Centrale and arrive in about 20–35 minutes. The station is inside the town, so there is no parking to worry about.

By car: 38 km, about 40 minutes. In summer the problem is not the road but parking.

The right walk (2–3 hours)

  1. Enter the old town through the Arco Marchesale.
  2. Find the panoramic terraces over the sea. The balconies on the cliff edge are why you came.
  3. Walk onto the Roman bridge above Lama Monachile for the classic view.
  4. Follow the seafront to the Modugno statue.
  5. In season, look for a quieter cove south of the centre.

Pair it with Monopoli

Morning in Polignano, then 5 minutes by train to Monopoli for lunch at the harbour and the afternoon in the old town. Back in Bari by train in half an hour.

FAQ

Can you swim at Lama Monachile?

Yes, it is a small pebble beach between two rock walls. In summer it is crowded by mid-morning: go early, or pick the coves south of town.

Where do you park in Polignano?

Use the official blue-line spaces or the organised car parks outside the centre and walk in. In summer, be wary of people asking for 'a tip' to park on public land.

Polignano or Monopoli?

Polignano is more dramatic, with houses on the cliff edge. Monopoli feels more lived-in, with a working harbour and a bigger old town. They are 5 minutes apart by train, so do both in one day.
