Monopoli from Bari: old town, old harbour and nearby coves
Short answer
Monopoli is about 30–40 minutes by regional train from Bari Centrale, or 48 km by car. It has a seafront old town, an old harbour still used by fishermen and rocky coves just outside town. Half a day is enough, and even better if you combine it with Polignano, 5 minutes away by train.
When to go
All year: the old town is lively even in winter. For swimming, June and September are the nicest months.
When to avoid
August weekends, if you are looking for a free beach near the centre: the coves fill up early.
If Polignano is the postcard, Monopoli is the town. Blue fishing boats in the old harbour, a white maze of an old town inside sea walls, a baroque cathedral and a castle on the water. And fewer people than Polignano.
How to get there from Bari
By train: regional trains on the Bari–Lecce line take about 30–40 minutes from Bari Centrale. You can walk from the station to the old town.
By car: 48 km, about 45 minutes. Park outside the walls.
What to see
- The old harbour: the heart of town, with colourful boats and fishermen mending nets.
- Cathedral of Maria Santissima della Madia: baroque, inside the old town.
- Castello Carlo V: on the sea, guarding the harbour.
- The walls and Cala Porta Vecchia: a walk along the walls with the small beach below.
Why it works as a day trip
Monopoli and Polignano are on the same railway line, 5 minutes apart. Without a car you can spend the morning in Polignano, have lunch and the afternoon in Monopoli, and be back in Bari by evening.
FAQ
Is Monopoli better than Polignano?
They are different. Polignano is more spectacular but small and crowded; Monopoli is bigger, more authentic and more relaxed. If you can, do both in one day.
Are there beaches within walking distance of the centre?
Yes: Cala Porta Vecchia is right below the old town walls. South of town the coast is a string of rock and sand coves, easy to reach by bike or car.
