Short answer

Alberobello is 57 km from Bari, about an hour by car. Ferrovie del Sud Est trains from Bari Centrale take about 1h40 to 2 hours, sometimes with a change; from the station to the Rione Monti trulli district is about a 10-minute walk. Half a day is enough. Combine it with Locorotondo or the Castellana Caves.

When to go

Early morning (before 10am) or late afternoon, on weekdays. From October to May, outside holiday weekends, the town feels completely different.

When to avoid

Sundays and holiday weekends from late morning to mid-afternoon, and August in general: the Rione Monti fills with groups and the lanes turn into a queue.

Trulli are dry-stone houses with conical roofs. In Alberobello there are not just a few scattered here and there: they fill entire districts. It is the most famous town in inland Puglia, which is exactly why timing matters.

How to get there from Bari

By car: 57 km, about an hour. Use the paid car parks on the edge of the centre; the town is small and easy to walk.

By train: Ferrovie del Sud Est from Bari Centrale, 1h40 to 2 hours, sometimes with a change. The station is about 800 m from the Rione Monti. Fine if you have time, less so if you want several towns in one day.

On a tour: day tours from Bari that combine Alberobello, Locorotondo and often Polignano or Matera are the fastest way to see the Itria Valley without a car.

What to see

  • Rione Monti: walk up to the trullo-shaped church of Sant’Antonio and come down by another lane.
  • Aia Piccola: the trulli district where people still live, quiet and real.
  • Trullo Sovrano: the only two-storey trullo, open to visitors.
  • Santa Lucia viewpoint: the panoramic view over the Rione Monti, and the photo to take.

The one tip that makes the trip

Arrive before 10am. At 9 the groups have not arrived yet, the low light falls on the white stone and the shops are just opening. Then drive 15 minutes to Locorotondo for lunch, where the pace is completely different.

FAQ

Rione Monti or Aia Piccola?

Rione Monti is the one in the photos, with over a thousand trulli and many shops. Aia Piccola, across the main road, is lived-in and much quieter. See both: Monti for the view, Aia Piccola for the atmosphere.

Can you go inside the trulli?

Yes: many are shops, some can be visited, and the Trullo Sovrano, the only two-storey trullo, is a small museum. Be wary of 'free rooftop tours' that end with a pushy sales pitch.

Is the train to Alberobello convenient?

It works, but it is slow and not very frequent. Ferrovie del Sud Est sometimes replaces trains with buses, so check the up-to-date timetable on the FSE website before you go.
