Short answer

You can see the Itria Valley from Bari in one day by car: Alberobello early in the morning, Locorotondo for lunch, Martina Franca in the afternoon, Cisternino at sunset and for dinner. The towns are 10–20 minutes apart, and Alberobello is about an hour from Bari. Without a car, an organised tour is by far the most practical option.

When to go

Spring and autumn, with green countryside and low light. In summer, shift everything towards the afternoon and evening.

When to avoid

Starting in Alberobello at noon on a Sunday: you will find the busiest town at the worst hour.

The Itria Valley is a basin of countryside where the provinces of Bari, Taranto and Brindisi meet. Dry-stone walls, olive trees, vineyards and thousands of trulli are scattered across the fields, and four white towns sit on the surrounding hills. It is Puglia’s most recognisable landscape.

The one-day route (by car)

Time Stop Why then
8:00 Leave Bari Arrive before the groups
9:00 Alberobello Rione Monti still empty
12:30 Locorotondo Lunch and the walk above the valley
15:00 Martina Franca Baroque old town
18:00 Cisternino Sunset and dinner at the fornelli pronti
21:30 Back to Bari About 1h10

Without a car

The valley is made for driving: the towns are close together, but public transport is sparse. If you don’t drive, choose an organised tour from Bari that covers at least Alberobello and Locorotondo. Or spend a night in the valley and get around by taxi or transfer.

FAQ

Can you do the Itria Valley by train?

Partly: Ferrovie del Sud Est serve Alberobello, Locorotondo and Martina Franca, but services are few and slow. Seeing three or four towns in one day by train is hard.

What are the fornelli pronti in Cisternino?

Butcher shops with a grill: you choose the meat at the counter, they cook it on the spot and you eat it there, often at tables in the street. Order the bombette, small pork rolls filled with cheese.
