Short answer

Bari is easy to see in one day on foot: Bari Vecchia with the Basilica of San Nicola and the Cathedral, the Arco Basso where women make orecchiette in the street, the Norman-Swabian Castle, then the seafront and the Murattiano district with the Petruzzelli Theatre. It is also the most practical base for day trips: the rail lines to the coast, the Itria Valley and Matera all start at Bari Centrale.

When to go

All year. Mornings for Bari Vecchia, evenings for the seafront and the passeggiata on Via Sparano.

When to avoid

The hottest summer afternoons in Bari Vecchia. And if you want calm, the days of the San Nicola festival in May, when the city fills with pilgrims.

Many people use Bari only as an airport and a railway station, and that is a mistake. The city has a lively old town, a very long seafront and some of the best street food in Italy. A day here is worth it.

The walk (one day)

  1. Basilica of San Nicola: Romanesque, home to the saint’s relics and a pilgrimage site for both Catholics and Orthodox Christians.
  2. Bari Vecchia: lanes, small squares and street shrines. Wander between Piazza Mercantile and Piazza del Ferrarese.
  3. Arco Basso: the “orecchiette street”, where pasta is made by hand outside people’s homes.
  4. Cathedral of San Sabino: the old town’s other great Romanesque church.
  5. Norman-Swabian Castle: on the edge of Bari Vecchia.
  6. The seafront: walk south from Bari Vecchia past the grand buildings of Lungomare Nazario Sauro.
  7. The Murattiano district: the 19th-century grid town, with Via Sparano and the Petruzzelli Theatre.

FAQ

Is Bari Vecchia safe?

It is the city's liveliest old town, busy with visitors and residents at all hours. Normal city precautions apply: watch bags and phones in crowded spots.

Where can you see orecchiette being made?

Around the Arco Basso in Bari Vecchia, between the castle and the cathedral. Women shape the pasta outside their front doors and sell it fresh.

Is Bari a good base to visit Puglia?

Without a car, yes: the three rail networks serving the coast, the Itria Valley and Matera all leave from Bari Centrale.
